The best place to start with acclimation to a blind dog is in the home or where the dog spends the most time. Consultations begin at $95 for a 2 hour consultation in your home within the San Diego Region. Fee may increase to include mileage if asked to travel outside of the San Diego area.
Since I want to hear all the helpful daily life and routine information, our initial training sessions tend to last 2 or more hours. Please block off enough time to not rush through these sessions.
The easiest place to start is in the home, so managing this environment and adapting it to a blind dog's needs is a courteous way to get started.
Teaching a blind dog to "wait" might save their life. Other cues include "Step", "Up", "This Way", "Let's Go" and "Find It". The other cues for normal dogs (Sit, stay. come, down) are important too. I'll show you how to tailor these commands to help your blind dog.
To keep your dog in good habits and practice during this transaction period, try to expect the same things out of your dog. Expect to spend more time to accomplish those tasks but expect the dog to finish the same routines as before. This way, they never fall out of practice and your transition is shorter and smoother.
I have so much more to share about this process. Please give me a call or book an appointment to receive an in-home consultation.
